Why Train With Us?
-
Our program is deeply rooted in our mission to end intergenerational cycles of trauma. We believe in the power of evidence-based practice, coupled with an integrative approach that considers the whole person. Our training program is designed to immerse you in the latest research, techniques, and real-world applications, all while fostering an environment of warmth, belonging, and professional growth.
-
Our training program emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach to mental health. As part of your training, you will shadow our occupational therapy and psychiatry departments, gaining valuable insights into how these disciplines intersect with psychological care. You’ll also receive training in comprehensive psychological evaluation, ensuring you are well-equipped to assess and understand your clients' needs from multiple perspectives.
-
As a trainee at Mala Child and Family Institute, you will receive well-rounded, hands-on experience in a variety of therapeutic modalities and settings. Our program offers specialized training in:
Child-Centered Play Therapy: Gain skills in working with children through play, understanding the unique ways they express and process their emotions.
Perinatal Mental Health Care: Learn to support individuals through the complex emotional journey of pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood.
Couples Therapy: Develop expertise in helping couples navigate the challenges of relationships, fostering healthy communication and connection.
Parent Coaching: Equip yourself with the tools to empower parents, helping them build stronger, more resilient families.
Suicide Prevention and DBT with Youth and Adults: Master the skills needed to support clients in crisis, utilizing evidence-based strategies like Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
Addiction Treatment: Understand the complexities of addiction and learn to provide effective, compassionate care.
Practicums
We currently offer practicums for doctoral students at Wayne State University and the University of Detroit Mercy in Clinical Psychology and Counseling Psychology. We accept between one and three students per year and applicants must be in advanced standing. As a practicum student, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in clinical work, applying what you've learned in your coursework to real-life scenarios. You'll work under close supervision, ensuring that you receive the guidance and support you need as you navigate the challenges and rewards of clinical practice. Our goal is to help you build a strong foundation that will serve you throughout your career.

Post Graduate Fellowships
Our intensive post-graduate fellowships are designed for those who have completed their masters or doctoral training and are looking to deepen their expertise and to become licensed. Our fellowship program is designed to help you transition from student to professional. You'll take on more responsibility, work with a broader range of clients, and have the opportunity to delve deeper into your areas of interest. The fellowship is an opportunity to refine your skills, explore new areas of practice, and prepare for the next stage of your career. You'll receive mentorship from experienced clinicians who are dedicated to your professional growth and personal well-being.
This program is designed to be a full-time, 1-year program or a part-time, 2-year program for individuals who would also like to work at Mala part-time during training. All Psychology Fellows will complete comprehensive training in Psychological Evaluations as part of their programming.
