My mom did not pass away; she was simply deployed, but for me, it felt like the end of the world since I couldn’t be with her or my dad. Growing up with dual military parents has provided me with a unique perspective. The significant impact of my mother’s deployment during the events of 9/11 greatly influenced my life and aspirations. This experience, along with my understanding of the specific challenges faced by military families, sparked my passion for a career in mental health.
Military couples and their children encounter a range of obstacles, including the stress of deployments, mobilizations, and training operations. These factors can deeply affect not just spouses but the entire family unit. Research shows that war can have negative effects on family functioning and relationships, which led me to reflect on my own family dynamics and how we navigated our complex, ever-changing lifestyle.
This reflection inspired me to help families learn to work together more effectively and cope with their unique circumstances. As I explored different mental health fields, I found myself particularly drawn to marriage and family therapy. Unlike traditional individual therapy, which often focuses on labeling or diagnosing, family therapy emphasizes understanding and collaboration among all family members. This approach resonated with me, as I came to appreciate the importance of fostering a supportive environment that encourages communication and connection.
Additionally, I became aware of the potential negative consequences of diagnoses within the military community, which can affect careers and reputations. This realization shifted my perspective as I thought about my own parents and how I would want them to be understood rather than categorized. The military is a distinct cultural group with its own languages, norms, and rituals. This observation applies to all branches of the military, each with its unique cultural dynamics.
Understanding behavior within this context has become increasingly important to me. I recognized that our actions and responses are often influenced by the situations we encounter, and acknowledging this connection is essential for providing effective support. My journey has reinforced my commitment to becoming a mental health professional dedicated to helping families navigate their challenges while honoring their unique experiences and cultural backgrounds. -
My passion for therapy and mental healthcare is rooted in the profound impact I can have on individuals from all walks of life. I am inspired by the opportunity to connect deeply with clients, guiding them through their journeys of emotional and behavioral growth. I find fulfillment in providing culturally sensitive care, recognizing and honoring the unique experiences and identities of each person I work with.
Creating a safe and empathetic environment is essential to my practice. I love fostering spaces where clients feel comfortable exploring their feelings and challenges openly. By utilizing evidence-based practices, I empower individuals to facilitate meaningful and lasting change in their lives.
Additionally, my interest in research enriches my understanding of the mental health field, motivating me to advocate for diverse populations and enhance the therapeutic experience for everyone. Ultimately, I am passionate about witnessing the transformative power of therapy, helping individuals build resilience and embrace their authentic selves as they navigate life’s complexities. Whether working with individuals, couples, or families, I am committed to supporting each person in their unique journey toward well-being. -

My philosophy is rooted in a systems perspective, where I view individuals in relation to their families and other interconnected systems. This approach allows me to see how each person both influences and is influenced by those around them. It’s essential to recognize that everyone is shaped by their environment, and their unique experiences significantly impact their perception of reality.
As marriage and family therapists working from a systemic standpoint, one of our primary focuses is to understand and explore the dynamics of a person's family of origin. I achieve this by examining the relationship between cause and condition, as well as gathering individual experiences to gain insight into the functioning and organization of these systems.
“Life is a canvas, and each moment is a brushstroke. Embrace the colors of your experiences, for they create the masterpiece of your journey—every challenge, joy, and connection adds depth to your story.” By appreciating this intricate tapestry, we can better understand how our past shapes our present and influences our future. This holistic perspective not only enriches our understanding of ourselves but also enhances our ability to support others on their unique journeys. -
Every moment is an opportunity for growth and connection. Embrace the journey, for each experience shapes who we are and helps us discover our true selves.
-
I find inspiration in positive individuals who radiate optimism and resilience. Their uplifting energy and ability to see the good in every situation motivate me to embrace a similar outlook in my own life.
-
I am passionate about guiding individuals to uncover their inherent strengths while honoring the rich tapestry of diverse cultures in my care. I strive to cultivate environments where open exploration is not just welcomed, but encouraged. Collaborating with clients is at the heart of my approach, whether we’re setting specific goals or simply navigating the nuances of everyday life. I truly believe that the journey of therapy can be a profound catalyst for change and transformation.
