Hi there, I’m Besa!
Welcome to Mala– I’m so glad you’ve made it here. I’m a psychotherapist and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, with several years of experience working with kids, teens, and adults. I have a strong background in school and community psychology, and I’m passionate about helping others reach their potential across contexts of life.
While I enjoy working with individuals of different ages and backgrounds, my expertise is within early childhood and elementary-aged children. With young kiddos, play therapy is essential to my practice. Research shows that play facilitates communication, increases a child’s personal strengths (problem solving, resiliency, moral development, self-regulation), fosters emotional wellness, and enhances social relationships.
Other techniques and modalities I incorporate include Sand Tray Therapy, game-play, and skill-building. Sand Tray Therapy is evidence-based and allows individuals to process and express traumas in a safe and developmentally appropriate way. Game-play is proven to enhance social-emotional wellness, reduce depressive symptoms, and increase cognitive functioning. With skill-building techniques, we intentionally focus on improving specific social-emotional skills, like coping skills or anger management skills. Above all, my priority is always to build a strong relationship with each individual I get to work with, as this is closely tied to emotional wellness and positive change.
My expertise in attachment theory and child development guides and supports my work with teens and adults. I often work with clients in this age range who are struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, low self-esteem, grief, or overwhelming life events. I draw on Person-Centered Therapy, Attachment-Based Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and mindfulness techniques to improve my client’s symptoms and encourage a more fulfilling life.
Finally, in addition to my role as a clinician, I’m also considered a Special Education Specialist at Mala. I’m highly trained in special education and 504 evaluations, behavior intervention planning, and multi-tiered interventions. I’m happy to provide consultation to parents who need help navigating the school system or want to learn how to better support their child’s educational progress. I can also be utilized to advocate for your child’s needs or to help complete observations in school, as I recognize that a school’s internal resources can be limited.

Who is someone who inspires you?
My father, Etem Karanfili, who crossed over in late 2013. He showed me what it means to be truly loved unconditionally, to accept myself for who I am, to be kind, and to never give up on my goals and dreams. I would simply not be who I am today without him.
